Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar said he fought off an attack by his co-pilot during a Wednesday flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, after which passengers subdued the co-pilot and the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
In a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted Friday, Machchhar said he was injured on the cockpit floor when he realized the aircraft was descending and forced himself to open the cockpit door. He said others then entered and helped control the situation. CBS reported the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to crash the plane.
Reports said 174 passengers and crew were aboard. The BBC said the plane dropped more than 17,000 feet, while PBS put the descent at 16,000 feet in about 60 seconds. Investigators were seeking a motive. Trump said he had heard of a possible Iran link, without offering evidence; Netanyahu said it was too early to determine Iranian involvement.
