Governor Wes Moore (D-MD) did not rule out the possibility of cutting his second term short if he is reelected in 2026.

Moore is running for reelection against former Republican state Delegate Dan Cox, whom he defeated in the 2022 gubernatorial race by a 32-point margin. The two candidates faced off in their first and only debate of the 2026 election cycle on Tuesday, which was recorded and set to air at 7 p.m., hosted by Maryland Public Television and WBAL-TV 11.

Moore has been viewed by some political analysts as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election. He previously stated that he would serve all four years of his second term if reelected. However, during the debate, he refrained from committing to serving the full term when asked by the moderator.

“Being the governor of Maryland has been the honor of a lifetime,” Moore said, according to the Baltimore Banner. “And I would not be running for reelection if I was not committed to the people of Maryland.”

Moore responded to the moderator's question about serving four years by stating, “I gave the answer.”

“I am committed to the people of Maryland. That’s why I am running for reelection,” Moore added, as reported by the outlet.

Moore recently discussed the future of the Democratic Party in a panel with another potential 2028 candidate, Governor Andy Beshear (D-KY). Moore expressed that Beshear’s voice “is going to be necessary” in the party’s future, to which Beshear responded, “Based on the time we’ve been here tonight, I think we’d make a pretty good team.”

Cox criticized Moore's lack of a definitive answer regarding his commitment to a full term, stating, “This governor will not look you in the eyes and commit to not running for president.”

Moore has been actively campaigning during the midterm season, likely aiming to increase his visibility and build alliances within the party. He recently campaigned in Virginia for Democratic House candidates in key districts.

The Cook Political Report highlights Moore’s high approval ratings and “charismatic” demeanor in its evaluation of the gubernatorial race, indicating it is a solid Democratic seat. Recent polls show Moore leading Cox by 27 percentage points.
