Building Collapse in Gaza City Results in 21 Fatalities

A war-damaged building collapsed in Gaza City, killing at least 21 Palestinians and raising concerns about unsafe structures. The incident occurred early on Wednesday when the al-Saada building collapsed, trapping residents beneath the rubble. Hayat al-Ajlah, a 37-year-old woman, was searching for her eight-year-old daughter, Dalia, after they were pulled from the wreckage. Hayat described hearing a cracking sound before the building fell, resulting in her being trapped with family members. She reported that nine members of her extended family were killed, including her parents and siblings, while her daughter was hospitalized with a serious head injury. Hayat noted that her family had previously been displaced from their home in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighborhood and had moved into the damaged building after a friend informed them of an available apartment. The family was preparing for a wedding celebration when the tragedy struck. At al-Shifa Hospital, relatives of the victims gathered, mourning their losses. Umm Mahmoud Saada, in her 70s, expressed grief for her son Mahmoud and his family, who had recently returned to Gaza City after being displaced. The search for survivors has been hampered by a shortage of heavy machinery and equipment, attributed to Israeli restrictions on imports and reconstruction efforts. Palestinian Civil Defence teams have been working with limited tools to rescue those trapped. Residents reported that the building had shown signs of damage throughout the conflict, with debris falling daily. Many expressed frustration and despair over their living conditions, questioning how long they would have to endure such dangers.
