Building Collapse in Gaza Results in Multiple Casualties and Trapped Families

Rescue crews in Gaza are working to pull survivors from a collapsed building in western Gaza City, where local media reports indicate that at least 12 people, including women and children, have died. Six families are reportedly trapped beneath the rubble, according to local witnesses and journalists. Gaza’s Civil Defence reported on Wednesday that among the deceased are five children. Verified footage from Al Jazeera shows rescue teams retrieving young children from the debris, with residents assisting in the effort. Witnesses reported hearing cries for help from children beneath the concrete as civil defence crews attempted to reach those trapped. Another video depicted a young girl being rescued alive from the wreckage, with several survivors, including children, emerging and appearing breathless before being transported by ambulance. Local media indicated that the building had previously been damaged in an earlier Israeli bombing, which compromised its structural integrity prior to the collapse. Thousands of homes and apartment buildings in Gaza have been damaged or partially destroyed during the ongoing conflict, leaving many uninhabitable and at risk of collapse. Many Palestinians are currently residing in makeshift shelters or in partially destroyed buildings, as Israel has restricted the entry of construction materials necessary for repairs, as well as heavy equipment needed for safe rubble clearance and rescue operations. This shortage has forced rescue crews to rely on manual labor, which has delayed response times during emergencies.
