Maggie Haberman of The New York Times stated that members of Donald Trump’s inner circle have privately acknowledged a significant mistake in planning the GOP’s first midterm convention, scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday in Dallas. On the September 3 broadcast of MS NOW’s "Morning Joe," host Jonathan Lemire pointed out that the first two games of the new NFL season will occur on the same days as the political event, which could affect viewership. Haberman confirmed this, stating, "And that was an error that some people around him privately acknowledge was something they had not been paying attention to." She noted that the scheduling blunder reflects the limited perspective of Trump's inner circle, which has become smaller and more insular. Haberman remarked that many members of Congress are expressing concerns about the timing, with some reluctant to attend the convention due to potential negative optics. She added that while Trump himself may not be particularly concerned about the implications for the 2026 midterms, many in his party and his advisers are.
