British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Parliament on Monday that a suspected plot against RAF Fairford in southern England was almost certainly directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Iran denied involvement in the alleged plan against the base, which has been used by U.S. bombers.
Burnham said the British assessment was that the activity was highly likely coordinated in Iran and warned that threats on British soil would not be tolerated. The government also summoned Iran’s ambassador and announced sanctions against two Iranian nationals over alleged hostile activity. Al Jazeera reported Tehran said it was willing to assist the investigation.
Police have made arrests in the case, but no charges have been filed, according to PBS NewsHour. PBS said seven men were arrested and released on bail; Deutsche Welle reported five British nationals were detained on Sept. 27 and another person was arrested later. The security alert led to the withdrawal of U.S. B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford.
