Sen. Eric Schmitt questioned former special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about attending a Feb. 3, 2024 basketball game, but the exchange centered on an apparent mix-up between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Schmitt said he had text messages placing Smith at a “Hawks” game and asked whether he attended a Golden State Warriors-Atlanta Hawks game. Smith denied attending that NBA game and asked what city it was in. NBC News reported that Schmitt had identified the wrong team. Schmitt later said he had made no mistake, according to the Washington Examiner, which reported he rejected the suggestion that he confused an NBA game with a college women’s game.
MS NOW reported that Republican Judiciary Committee staff had warned Schmitt that the Justice Department materials were unvetted, citing a source with direct knowledge of the discussion. The hearing concerned Smith’s investigations into President Donald Trump, NBC News reported.
