The Justice Department filed an ethics complaint Wednesday against seven federal judges in Minnesota over comments they made to The New York Times about pressures on their courts during an immigration enforcement surge.
The judges described handling a flood of cases during Operation Metro Surge, an enforcement effort in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area that led to thousands of arrests from December to February, according to Al Jazeera and PBS. The department alleges the judges violated judicial ethics by speaking publicly about the cases. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the judges showed bias against the Trump administration and urged them to step aside from cases involving the Department of Homeland Security, Al Jazeera reported. Judge Patrick Schiltz said he was acting within the ethical rules for federal judges in speaking with The Times.
