The Vatican said Wednesday that Pope Leo XIV was recovering as expected after surgery following a lung cancer diagnosis, while his planned South American trip remained on the schedule.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle led a Mass in St. Peter’s Square in the pope’s absence, with prayers offered for his health, the New York Times reported. Fox News reported that surgery removed part of Leo’s right lung. In South America, officials, church leaders and worshippers offered prayers and support, PBS NewsHour reported.

The expected visit next month includes Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, according to PBS. President Donald Trump also wished the pope a speedy recovery, Fox News reported.
