Pope Leo XIV said Sunday that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a localized nodule from his lung at Rome's Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital.

Speaking during the Angelus, Leo said doctors found the nodule at a very early stage and that it was well-localized. He said his doctors recommended surgery and that he would follow their advice. He also thanked those gathered for their spiritual closeness and prayers.

The Vatican did not give an exact date for the operation. According to the Vatican, as reported by PBS, Leo is expected to recover for about a week after surgery.
