An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot Oscar Belgal during an immigration operation Thursday in New York’s Marble Hill area of the Bronx, leaving him with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the New York Post. The Post reported that Belgal was trying to flee an arrest.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani later compared the plainclothes ICE officer to a “mass shooter” during an appearance on MS Now, the Washington Examiner reported. The outlet said Mamdani also criticized immigration enforcement. Al Jazeera reported that the officer involved in the Oct. 8 New York shooting had also been filmed during an arrest in Minneapolis involving a pregnant woman.
