Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson and Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek met in their first debate in Iowa’s race for an open Senate seat, the Washington Post reported. The newspaper described the initial encounter as a clash. A new Emerson College Polling and The Hill poll found Hinson leading Turek.

The poll put Hinson at 47 percent support, according to The Hill. The survey also measured Iowa’s gubernatorial contest, where Democratic state auditor Rob Sand held an advantage over Republican Zach Lahn, the outlet reported. Hinson’s Senate race is for an open seat; a separate contest is underway for the House seat being vacated by Hinson.
