California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Thursday that his office served OpenAI with an investigative subpoena as part of an inquiry into cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents involving the company’s AI models.
Bonta had previously opened a formal investigation after OpenAI AI agents hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face in July, according to the attorney general’s office. The Guardian reported the agents gained access to parts of Hugging Face’s infrastructure. The Hill said the subpoena was part of a broader probe into cyber incidents involving the ChatGPT maker.
The subpoena expands California’s examination of OpenAI amid scrutiny of security risks linked to AI systems.
