California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that maintains the term "Artificial Intelligence" in the state, countering efforts by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to adopt the term "super intelligence."

Newsom stated on social media, "I just signed an executive order permanently declaring Artificial Intelligence 'Artificial Intelligence' in California. You're welcome, America." This action responds to a recent executive order from Trump that redefined AI as "super intelligence." Trump explained that the name change was made because "it's not artificial, we all agree on that."

In his executive order, Newsom emphasized that California will continue to use the term artificial intelligence, asserting that changing the terminology does not mitigate the risks associated with the technology's development. The order noted, "While language and choice of terminology can have significance, purporting to change something’s name cannot distract a person of normal intelligence from recognizing that impotent and craven failure to take action to address well-documented emerging security and safety risks posed by that thing."

Concerns regarding the rapid development of AI have been voiced by Democrats and tech leaders, who are advocating for increased regulation. Progressives, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar, have called for Congressional action on the matter.

Trump has maintained a supportive stance on AI, arguing that the United States must compete effectively against global rivals such as China.
