Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will compete in an Oct. 25 runoff after neither won a majority in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, according to the country’s electoral court.
With more than 99% of ballots processed, Deutsche Welle reported Bolsonaro had 47.2% and Lula 45%. The BBC reported a 47% to 45% split with nearly all votes counted. The New York Post, citing the electoral court, reported Bolsonaro had just over 55.8 million votes and Lula nearly 53.2 million. Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, while Lula is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term. Brazil requires a candidate to receive more than 50% of valid votes to win in the first round.
