OpenAI said Friday it stood by its dismissal of three former safety researchers, saying an internal investigation found they mishandled sensitive information and committed a significant breach of trust.
The company identified the employees as Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak and Mikita Balesni. In an open letter and posts on X, the former employees said they had been dismissed after raising safety concerns. Balesni wrote that he believed they were fired for putting safety ahead of OpenAI's near-term corporate interests. OpenAI said the dismissals were not related to safety concerns or public criticism. A company spokesperson told the BBC on Oct. 2 that its investigation confirmed the individuals had handled sensitive information outside company procedures.
