<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/openai/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">OpenAI</a> has taken action against threat actors in <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/russia/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Russia</a> and <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/iran/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Iran</a> who utilized the company’s chatbot to support “false front” entities aimed at conducting covert influence operations globally.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The artificial intelligence lab detailed its initiatives in a <a href="https://openai.com/index/disrupting-ai-enabled-false-front-operations/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">safety report</a> released on Thursday, coinciding with growing public concerns regarding the advanced <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/technology/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">technology</a>.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Russian operation involved a fake think tank operating in <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/latin-america/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Latin America</a>, which created counterfeit leaked documents and audio scripts. According to OpenAI, these foreign actors used <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/chatgpt/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ChatGPT</a> to damage “Ukraine’s reputation in the region” and influence “local political outcomes.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In contrast, the Iranian operation involved seven fabricated journalist personas who pitched long-form articles to various news outlets, focusing on the U.S. war against Iran. OpenAI referred to this operation as “Bogus Bylines,” which also generated social media comments related to the geopolitical conflict.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">OpenAI has banned multiple ChatGPT accounts linked to both Russia and Iran. The operations, especially the one in Russia, utilized the chatbot to draft internal reports.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company stated that the aim of these influence operations was to “launder geopolitical, conflict-related messaging into their target audiences.” OpenAI expressed that by reporting on these “false front” operations, it aims to “make further research and disruption easier — and make continuing the operations harder.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">OpenAI and <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/anthropic/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Anthropic</a>, two leading AI developers in the United States, have committed to transparency in response to recent events that have raised concerns among lawmakers and consumers regarding the future of the technology.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similar to Anthropic, OpenAI has released safety reports. Anthropic’s latest threat intelligence report <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/technology/4719252/anthropic-alarm-ai-model-misuse-biological-weapon/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">highlighted concerns</a> about how foreign actors have misused its AI models for researching and developing biological weapons, among other issues.</p>
