At least four people, including three children and one adult, were killed Thursday afternoon in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, according to CBS News. The gunman is also deceased.
The suspect opened fire outside the school before entering the building, according to an officer. The gunman was killed inside the school by an armed bystander before police arrived. Multiple media outlets, citing sources, reported that the shooter was a 16-year-old male.
Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department, stated, "We received the first report at 12:59 of a shooter outside of the building shooting into a car, and within about a minute, we were receiving multiple 911 calls from within the school. Our officers were on scene at 1:02, and the shooter was down seconds later."
Miller mentioned that several individuals, including children, were transported to a local hospital for treatment, but the total number of victims remains unclear.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents are on the scene, stating, "We will make every resource they need available."
Bend, located approximately three hours from Portland, has a population of nearly 100,000 residents. Silver Rail is a public K-5 school serving 438 students.
A reunification center is being established at a local church, and police have advised the public to avoid the area.
Miller expressed her emotions, stating, "It’s devastating, and our hearts go out to this community, and we ask our community to really work together and come together at this time."
This is a developing story.
