Three children and a teacher were killed Thursday in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, and the 16-year-old suspected shooter was also killed, authorities said.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children who died were 5, 8 and 11. Police responded at 1:02 p.m. after calls reporting an active shooter; an initial caller said someone with a long gun had fired at a vehicle near the school. Authorities said a community member pursued and killed the suspect, though earlier police statements said the circumstances of his death were still unclear.
Two people were injured and taken to a hospital, according to Deutsche Welle. The Guardian reported they were a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old, both in critical condition. Officials were investigating whether the suspect had ties to the school.
