New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned a shooting incident involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an arrest in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx on Thursday at approximately 4 p.m. local time. The New York Police Department (NYPD) stated that its personnel were not involved in the shooting, and the individual who was shot is currently conscious and receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Mamdani urged President Donald Trump to cease ICE operations in the city, stating, "This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation." He mentioned that he has contacted Trump and plans to demand an end to ICE enforcement actions during their conversation.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also been briefed on the incident and called for federal authorities to provide a comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, emphasizing that New Yorkers deserve clarity on the matter.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that an ICE officer discharged his weapon while attempting to arrest a man identified as a "criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic" with connections to the Trinitarios gang. DHS reported that the individual had a prior conviction for grand larceny and had multiple arrests for various offenses, including assault and robbery. Following the shooting, ICE officers provided immediate aid to the injured man, who is now hospitalized.
The FBI is currently investigating the incident. Previous ICE and Border Patrol shootings have sparked significant controversy, particularly concerning agent training and oversight. Notably, an ICE agent was involved in the fatal shooting of a US citizen in Minneapolis earlier this year, which led to protests across several cities.
