Prosecutors allege that his in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, executed a planned ambush.</p><p>The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged the couple with murder, alleging they intentionally killed McKinsey by "lying in wait." Several 911 callers reported gunfire before a Dublin Police Services sergeant arrived and found McKinsey with multiple gunshot wounds.</p><p>Witnesses directed officers to a black Honda Civic leaving the parking lot, leading to a high-risk traffic stop nearby. Chen was allegedly driving while Zhang was a passenger. Three witnesses identified the couple as the shooters, and surveillance video reportedly captured them firing at McKinsey.</p><p>Police allege that the couple shot in a crowded parking lot with "blatant disregard for public safety," even with children present. Zhang later admitted to shooting McKinsey during an interview with investigators, and police recovered a second firearm that Zhang allegedly used.</p><p>McKinsey's death occurred amid a divorce and child custody dispute involving his estranged wife, Candice Jang. Court records show that McKinsey filed for divorce in December, and the couple had multiple hearings scheduled, including a family law status conference and a domestic violence restraining order hearing.</p><p>McKinsey accused Jang of physical and emotional abuse and claimed conflicts with his in-laws, including allegations of anti-LGBTQ slurs directed at him and his son. Jang, in her protection order request, alleged that McKinsey physically and emotionally abused her and their children.</p><p>Prosecutors charged McKinsey in October with two misdemeanor counts for allegedly striking his 6-year-old son and leaving his 2-year-old child home alone. McKinsey denied the allegations, claiming Jang orchestrated the situation to frame him. Despite ongoing legal battles, a judge approved unsupervised public visits with the couple's children.</p><p>Police served a search warrant at Jang's home, but authorities have not disclosed what they were seeking.
