Shili Chen and Shouyong Zhang, both 77, were charged with murder in the shooting death of their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, at a California public park on Saturday, according to the Guardian. The couple appeared for arraignment Wednesday in Dublin, California, the New York Post reported.

Authorities said McKinsey, described by the Guardian as a New York Times games engineer, was killed days before a hearing in his divorce case with the couple’s daughter, Candice Jang. The Post reported that McKinsey and Jang had three children and were disputing custody after he filed for divorce last year.

The Guardian reported that Jang appeared virtually at Wednesday’s hearing and that an attorney for Chen and Zhang could not be reached before the proceeding.
