Mitch McConnell Challenges Donald Trump on Taiwan Security Aid

McConnell, who has been less visible in recent weeks due to health issues, joined other senators in expressing concerns that Trump's approach to Taiwan could undermine U.S. deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region.</p><p>The senators, including Thom Tillis, Lisa Murkowski, and John Cornyn, sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, emphasizing that the U.S. must maintain its credibility in protecting its interests in the region. They stated, "It is difficult to imagine how the United States might credibly protect influence in the Indo-Pacific if the price of keeping up appearances is denying our partners key deterrence capabilities."</p><p>In the letter, they referenced the consequences of a previous freeze on assistance to Ukraine ahead of a summit in 2021, which preceded Russia's invasion. It remains unclear if McConnell personally signed the letter or if it was done by aides due to his health condition.</p><p>Since returning to work on September 14, McConnell has been seen in a wheelchair and has spoken infrequently during Senate sessions. His wife, Elaine Chao, who has ties to China, was in the country when McConnell was hospitalized in June.</p><p>The timing of the letter coincides with Trump's welcoming of Xi at the White House, which included military honors and a state dinner featuring prominent tech leaders. The dinner menu was curated by First Lady Melania Trump, incorporating American ingredients with Chinese influences.</p><p>Trump's hosting of Xi has drawn criticism from some GOP allies who question the optics of engaging with a leader from the Communist Party, especially in light of the upcoming midterm elections. The letter from McConnell and the other senators calls for the release of $1.3 billion in approved security assistance for Taiwan and a $14 billion weapons package that Trump has delayed.</p><p>The senators reminded Rubio and Hegseth of their previous statements advocating for stronger security cooperation with Taiwan, highlighting the importance of deterring potential Chinese aggression. McConnell's relationship with Trump has been complex, marked by both cooperation and conflict, particularly regarding issues like healthcare and the events of January 6, 2021.</p>
