Trump Invites Putin to G20 Summit in Miami

United States President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, Florida, as part of efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Wednesday that the invitation was extended for Putin to attend the summit in December, expressing hope that the Russian leader would engage with global leaders. "In order to solve problems, you have to meet with the people that you disagree with or the people that you might have some issues with," Rubio said. "So we’ve invited President Putin to the G20." Rubio emphasized that the summit would provide an opportunity for Putin to interact not only with Trump but also with other world leaders. His comments followed a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressing the UNGA, urged the international community to impose greater financial pressure on Russia, stating, "When someone gives Russia more money through trade, they give this war more time." Zelenskyy expressed skepticism regarding Russia's willingness to take meaningful steps toward ending the conflict. Trump has sought an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to resolve the war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Ukrainian officials have called for a pause in strikes on energy infrastructure and measures to facilitate shipping in the Black Sea, but Russia has shown little interest in such arrangements. Lavrov stated, "We are not going to have a pause in our special military operation," accusing Europe of wanting to halt fighting to supply weapons to Ukraine. Despite this, Rubio expressed optimism about the potential for a limited ceasefire involving grain and energy. Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine remains open to a maritime truce in the Black Sea, stating, "We are waiting for Russia’s response." He added that Ukraine is prepared to ensure safe shipping and food security in the Black Sea if Russia is willing to take genuine steps toward de-escalation. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023 for the alleged war crime of deporting Ukrainian children to Russian territory. This warrant requires member states to arrest Putin if he travels to their countries, although the ICC lacks an enforcement mechanism for this. The US is not a member of the ICC.
