US Grants Visas to Iranian Delegation for UN General Assembly Amid Ongoing Conflict

The US government has issued visas to Iranian officials, allowing them to attend the UN General Assembly in New York next week, as the conflict between the two countries continues into its seventh month. The core delegation includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to the BBC. A spokesman for the US State Department confirmed the decision on Thursday, stating that the delegation will be subject to travel restrictions and prohibited from purchasing certain American products. The spokesperson emphasized that this action aligns with the US's obligations as the host country for the UNGA. The delegation will be smaller than in the previous year, which saw Iranian diplomats banned from shopping at wholesale stores like Costco and required to seek permission for luxury purchases, including jewelry, alcohol, and cars. State Department Spokesman Tommy Pigott stated that the US aims to prevent the delegation from exploiting the UNGA for luxury shopping while the Iranian populace faces significant hardships, including shortages of water and electricity, and high inflation. He warned New York retailers to be cautious about selling goods to the Iranian delegation. The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is currently underway, with the General Debate set to begin on Tuesday, featuring speeches from leaders including US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The conflict with Iran began on February 28, following joint attacks by the US and Israel, and has led to Iranian attacks on US bases and allied states in the Gulf, as well as Israel. Additionally, the US denied a visa to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation for the second consecutive year, citing a lack of recognition of their legitimacy.
