Diplomatic Efforts for Zelenskyy-Trump Meeting at UN General Assembly

Efforts are underway to organize a meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the United Nations General Assembly next week. Ukrainian and US diplomatic teams are actively working to set up this meeting at the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York, according to a press briefing by Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi. Tykhyi stated that Zelenskyy’s visit will include multiple bilateral negotiations and engagements with US legislators, business leaders, and the Ukrainian community in the US. Zelenskyy and Trump last met at the White House in July following a previous encounter in 2025 that ended abruptly after US Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy for not expressing gratitude for US support. As preparations for the UN visit continue, a Russian drone strike on a bus in Nikopol resulted in at least five fatalities and seven injuries. The UN reports a significant increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine this year, with at least 1,396 civilians killed and 7,978 wounded in the first half of 2026, marking a 37 percent rise from the same period in the previous year. Additionally, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is affecting diesel prices, according to the International Energy Agency. Last week, Trump urged Zelenskyy to cease strikes on Russian diesel infrastructure, attributing global fuel shortages to these attacks rather than the conflict with Iran. Trump remarked that the rise in diesel prices is primarily influenced by the situation in Russia and Ukraine. Zelenskyy has indicated that Ukraine is prepared to halt attacks on Russian territory if the US can secure a commitment from Moscow to refrain from targeting Ukrainian infrastructure.
