India warns US tariffs on Russian oil could affect bilateral relations

India has warned the United States that proposed tariffs on the purchase of Russian oil could impact bilateral relations. This warning follows the US Congress's approval of a bill that grants President Donald Trump authority to impose tariffs on countries buying Russian oil. The US House of Representatives passed the sanctions and tariff bill on September 16, 2026, aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine. The bill targets Russia's energy and defense sectors, as well as President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials. It also allows for tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries, including India, to reduce their reliance on Russian oil and gas, while extending sanctions on Iran. The bill has been sent to President Trump for signing into law. India's foreign ministry stated that it is committed to ensuring energy security for its population of 1.4 billion people. The ministry noted that it had raised concerns about the bill with US officials in recent months and had clearly articulated the potential implications for both the bilateral relationship and the international energy market. The Indian government plans to collaborate with trade and industry bodies to address the legislation's consequences. India is the world's third-largest oil importer and one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, which has been crucial for Moscow's budget since the onset of the Ukraine invasion in February 2022 amid extensive Western sanctions. New Delhi has consistently resisted pressure to decrease its oil trade with Russia, emphasizing the need for secure and affordable energy supplies for its economy.
