All trains and buses in the Washington metropolitan area are scheduled to stop moving for one minute on Thursday morning in remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that occurred 25 years ago.

The planned moment of silence is set to start at 9:37 a.m. on Friday, the time when one of the four airplanes hijacked by terrorists struck the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

Randy Clarke, the general manager of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, clarified that train operators and bus drivers will stop at a safe location while participating in the moment of silence.

“We’re not going to stop a bus at a light or in the middle of an intersection. They’re going to get to where it’s a safe place to do a moment of silence,” Clarke said.

“We think it’s really an important thing to show how much Metro remembers our colleagues and what they did, and also just the significance in our country,” he added. “We’re the national capital, and our capital got attacked.”

The attack on the Pentagon resulted in the deaths of 184 people. In total, there were nearly 3,000 deaths across New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

In 2008, a memorial was established at the Pentagon in honor of the lives lost on American Airlines Flight 77.

The Pentagon is the only one of the three attack sites that still does not have a visitor center or museum. The planned 9/11 Pentagon Memorial Visitor Education Center is set to open in 2029, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Saturday, one day after the 25th anniversary.
