<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, four hijacked airplanes were used in coordinated attacks against the United States, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths and significant changes to American life. On the 25th anniversary, ceremonies will be held in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania to honor the victims, survivors, and first responders.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In New York City, the annual reading of the names of the 2,983 victims of the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the Memorial Plaza. The attacks in New York resulted in the deaths of 2,753 individuals, including 343 firefighters and 23 police officers.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first attack occurred at 8:46 a.m. when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, followed by United Airlines Flight 175 hitting the south tower at 9:03 a.m. The ceremony will include seven moments of silence corresponding to the times of the attacks and will be restricted to victims’ family members, with the memorial plaza reopening to the public later in the day.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum, which opened on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, features two reflecting pools located in the footprints of the original towers, designed by architect Michael Arad. That evening, the “Tribute in Light” installation will illuminate Lower Manhattan with two beams of light.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Disney will partner with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum to broadcast “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan” at 8 p.m., featuring musical performances. All living former U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, are expected to attend the New York ceremony, along with Vice President JD Vance representing the Trump administration.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Arlington, Virginia, the Pentagon Memorial will host its own commemoration at 9:37 a.m., marking the moment American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, killing 125 individuals inside the building. The ceremony will include a moment of silence and remarks from various officials.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Flight 93 National Memorial will hold its 25th annual observance beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the tolling of the Bells of Remembrance and a reading of the names of the 40 passengers and crew who died when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed while attempting to retake control from hijackers.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is collaborating with the National Park Service on an exhibit featuring artifacts from the Flight 93 site, which will be displayed as part of the anniversary observances.</p>
