Jurors Discuss Evidence Leading to Mistrial in Lindsay Clancy Case

Three women who served as jurors in the Lindsay Clancy trial have discussed their decision to find the mother-of-three not guilty of murder before a lone holdout juror caused a mistrial. Clancy, 36, admitted to strangling her children with exercise bands but argued in court that she was overmedicated while suffering from postpartum depression, which led to a psychosis. Jury foreperson Roni Carlson recounted to NBC Boston, 'We weren't trying to figure out if she murdered the children, she did and she's admitting to that. We're trying to figure out: Did she know right from wrong at that time?' Carlson noted that evidence presented, including testimonies and journal entries, indicated that Clancy loved her children. Consequently, 11 of the 12 jurors were prepared to find her not guilty by reason of insanity. However, one juror refused to acquit Clancy, prompting Judge William Sullivan to declare a mistrial. The three female jurors expressed frustration with the holdout juror, stating he 'would not interact with us and try to understand.' Carlson mentioned that the juror admitted to having reasonable doubt but still would not agree to a not guilty verdict. The jury deliberated for over 37 hours over five-and-a-half weeks regarding the charges of murder and manslaughter of Clancy's children—Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan—in January 2023. Following the mistrial declaration, Clancy faces a retrial. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington has sought a pardon for Clancy from President Donald Trump, describing her as a good person and expressing his strong bond with her. Reddington acknowledged his limited knowledge of postpartum depression prior to the trial. He also discussed his remarks about the prosecution, stating he does not regret them and is open to negotiating a deal with District Attorney Tim Cruz to avoid another trial.
