Rep. Maggie Goodlander Advances to General Election in New Hampshire

<p>Rep. Maggie Goodlander, a Democrat from New Hampshire, won her primary election, allowing her to advance to the general election in a district that leans Democratic. This district encompasses the western half of New Hampshire, extending from Massachusetts to the Canadian border.</p><p>Goodlander, who is married to former Biden National Security Adviser Jacob Sullivan, is seeking to succeed retiring Rep. Ann Kuster, also a Democrat, in the upcoming election.</p><p>Despite Republican dominance in the governor's office in recent years, Democrats have maintained success at the congressional level in New Hampshire. The district has been represented by Democrats since 2013, with previous representation by Republican Rep. Charles Bass, who served two non-consecutive terms.</p><p>In the primary, Goodlander faced New Hampshire State Rep. Paige Beauchemin, a Democrat from Hillsborough, and will also contend with an independent candidate in the general election. The winner of a recent Republican primary was Lily Tang Williams, who previously ran against Goodlander.</p><p>Sullivan's role in the Biden administration included significant involvement during the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021, foreign relations at the onset of the Russia-Ukraine War, and management of U.S.-China relations.</p><p>Beauchemin has criticized Goodlander from a progressive standpoint, suggesting that Goodlander has not been sufficiently effective during her first term. The district is characterized as more rural and includes areas such as Pittsburg in northern New Hampshire.</p><p>With Rep. Chris Pappas, another Democrat, vacating his House seat to run for the Senate seat being left open by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the political landscape in New Hampshire is expected to change significantly in January.</p>
