Smithsonian Institution head Lonnie Bunch III announces retirement amid tensions with Trump administration

Lonnie Bunch III, the head of the Smithsonian Institution, announced his retirement on Tuesday, effective by the end of the year. Bunch has led the Smithsonian since 2019 and was the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. In a press release, he expressed mixed emotions about his departure, stating, "It is with very mixed emotions and heartfelt gratitude that I announce my retirement from the Smithsonian. I have spent nearly half of my life working at and being part of the Smithsonian family, and what a privilege it has been. There is no place like the Smithsonian — it has been one of the great loves of my life, and I am extraordinarily proud of what we have accomplished together." He added, "I leave with pride and sadness, gratitude and joy, and with enormous confidence in the people who will carry this remarkable institution forward." Bunch's retirement follows increased scrutiny from the Trump administration, which has accused the Smithsonian's leadership of allowing progressive ideology to influence its portrayal of American history. The administration raised concerns about potential violations of federal nondiscrimination law, claiming that the Smithsonian's culture may have led to significant violations, including creating a hostile work environment and allocating resources based on race and ethnicity. The Department of the Interior's letter did not provide specific evidence of illegal activity. The administration warned that federal support could be withdrawn if its concerns are not addressed, emphasizing the need for an appropriate response from the Smithsonian regarding executive leadership and institutional ideology. Bunch became the Smithsonian's 14th secretary in June 2019, marking him as the first African American and first historian to hold the position. He joined the Smithsonian in 1978 and has spent nearly four decades there, aside from a period as president of the Chicago Historical Society. Chief Justice John Roberts, chancellor of the Smithsonian, commended Bunch's tenure, stating that he has pursued excellence in narrating the nation's story. The Smithsonian Board of Regents Chair Franklin D. Raines announced that the board will appoint an acting secretary and begin a search for Bunch's successor.
