European Union foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas announced that the EU is increasing pressure on Russia after Germany accused Moscow of a failed drone attack on a German airport. Kallas described the attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport as 'state-sponsored terrorism' and stated that efforts to intimidate Europe would not succeed. She indicated that the EU is working on new proposals to enhance sanctions enforcement and plans to impose additional sanctions.
Kallas mentioned that the bloc is preparing to sanction around 1,600 individuals and entities connected to Russia’s military sector and is open to further sanctions. She noted broad support among EU foreign ministers for a ban on former Russian military personnel visiting the EU and discussed the possibility of tightening visa restrictions for Russian tourists.
The EU has sought to exert maximum pressure on Russia without resorting to military action. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, over 3,000 Russian officials, oligarchs, and companies have been sanctioned. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that authorities are exploring ways to further impact Russia’s financial resources.
The attempted drone attack on August 4, which involved three drones carrying explosives, temporarily disrupted air traffic at the airport. Russia has denied any involvement, with President Vladimir Putin claiming that evidence had been fabricated. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Russia would face consequences for its actions, while Russia's foreign ministry summoned Germany's envoy to reject the accusations.
