<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), at 80 years old, is facing a primary challenge from Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) in Massachusetts. Despite concerns regarding his age, Markey's long-standing progressive credentials may help him maintain his position.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Markey has been in Congress longer than Moulton has been alive. Moulton, 47, has attempted to highlight age as a key issue in the race, suggesting that Markey is out of touch and calling for a new generation of leadership.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As Massachusetts voters prepare for the primary on September 6, 2026, Markey's progressive record appears to resonate more with voters than his age. Polls indicate that he is leading Moulton by as much as 35 points, particularly among self-identified liberal voters.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While both candidates share similar positions on many issues, Moulton has faced criticism for his past opposition to transgender athletes in girls' sports and has not fully embraced Markey's support for government-run healthcare.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Political science professor Tatishe Nteta noted that Markey's emphasis on his support for the Green New Deal and Medicare for All reinforces his appeal to the progressive electorate. Markey has received endorsements from prominent progressives, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although age-related attacks have been a factor in the campaign, they have not significantly impacted Markey's standing among voters. A recent UMass poll showed an 82% approval rating among self-identified Democrats, despite some respondents labeling him as "old."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Markey previously faced a challenge from younger Democrat Joe Kennedy in 2020, which he won by an 11-point margin. This history suggests that age-related arguments may not be as effective against him as they have been in other races.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moulton has also attempted to associate Markey with Democratic leadership in the Senate and has expressed his intention to oppose Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer if elected. Markey has refrained from making a similar commitment, instead portraying Moulton as influenced by special interests.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Markey has stated he would not run for re-election in 2032, when he would be 86 years old, addressing concerns about his age directly.</p>
