Senator Ed Markey Wins Democratic Primary Against Seth Moulton

<p>Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and activist, expressed support for Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., following his victory in a primary contest against Representative Seth Moulton, D-Mass., on September 1, 2026. Markey, who is 80 years old, defeated Moulton, who is 33 years younger, in a race that highlighted generational differences within the Democratic Party.</p><p>Piker stated on X, "It’s very clear that the Dem voters care more about policies and having a progressive represent them in the Senate than age! Another w for our movement!" Markey's campaign emphasized his progressive credentials, particularly in relation to transgender rights, a topic Moulton focused on in his campaign.</p><p>Markey stated, "Trans athletes should be able to play. That reflects Massachusetts and who we are. And Seth Moulton does not," as reported by The New York Times. His support for climate change legislation also resonated with younger voters.</p><p>The Sunrise Movement congratulated Markey, stating, "Sen. Markey has been a leading climate champion in the fight for a Green New Deal to create jobs and lower costs for working people." The group identifies itself as a movement of young people advocating for progressive policies.</p><p>David Axelrod, a political consultant, noted Markey's shift from being a social conservative to embracing progressive ideals, which he credited for Markey's political longevity. Axelrod remarked, "[Ed Markey] was first elected to Congress 50 yrs ago as a social conservative, opposed to abortion rights and school busing. Now 80, he's likely to sail in tonight's primary in MA, despite his age, because, in his Golden Years, he's grabbed on to the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, trans rights and other marquee priorities of the Left."</p><p>Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., also praised Markey's victory, stating, "Congratulations to Ed Markey on his landslide victory in the Democratic Massachusetts Senate primary. Ed knows that, at a time of massive income and wealth inequality, Congress must take on the billionaires and fight for working families."</p><p>Markey is now set to compete in the general election on November 3, 2026, where he is favored to win in Massachusetts, having previously secured 66.2% of the vote against Republican Kevin O’Connor in his last election.</p>
