Progressive candidates seeking Senate seats are utilizing faith as a political tool to connect with voters. Candidates Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, Abdul El-Sayed, and Texas state Rep. James Talarico are challenging the Democratic establishment in their campaigns this midterm cycle.
These candidates have incorporated their religious beliefs into their messaging, drawing parallels to the "Moral Majority" coalition from the late 1970s, which sought to connect policy with Christianity during Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign.
Nixon recently achieved a significant upset against Alexander Vindman, a prominent figure during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial, and is now a target for the GOP due to her association with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). During a sermon at the Saint Paul AME Church in Jacksonville, Florida, Nixon stated that her positions are similar to those of Jesus Christ, saying, "They are trying … to label me as this extremist, this radical. But, you know, Jesus was a radical."
She continued, "And Jesus fought for — I mean, he pushed for the same things that I'm fighting for today, right? Right now, we're literally in a civil rights moment." Nixon joined the DSA in June, which has drawn criticism from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), linking her to socialism despite her denial of being a Democratic socialist.
El-Sayed, who is running in Michigan’s competitive Senate race, also invoked Christ in discussions about his policy positions. He stated, "Well, you know, Jesus, peace and blessings be upon him, was considered radical in his time, too," emphasizing the importance of standing firm against corruption.
Talarico, who is pursuing a Senate seat in Texas, has integrated his faith into his campaign, taking seminary classes to become a Presbyterian minister. He has faced criticism from Republicans for his religious messaging, particularly regarding his defense of transgender children and his argument against the Texas GOP’s anti-trans bill, stating that God encompasses both masculine and feminine qualities.
