Recent polling indicates that El-Sayed holds a slight lead over Rogers in this critical battleground state. During the rally in a Detroit suburb, Vance characterized El-Sayed, who is Muslim, as a divisive figure lacking interest in community unity. Vance stated, 'I realize that there's something about Abdul El-Sayed that is very, very evil and on the rise in the United States of America today,' claiming he seeks to 'destroy' the country.
Vance further linked El-Sayed to controversial far-left influencer Hasan Piker, who previously suggested that the U.S. deserved the 9/11 attacks. Although El-Sayed distanced himself from Piker, Vance continued to associate the two during his speech.
In a subsequent interview with CNN, El-Sayed countered Vance's accusations, describing several policies from the Trump administration as 'evil.' He stated, 'Evil is ripping healthcare away from working people in exchange for tax breaks for billionaires,' and criticized rising costs for groceries and gas while highlighting the divisive nature of Vance's politics. El-Sayed clarified his earlier comments regarding the Vance family, suggesting that Vance's political philosophy implies that some individuals are more American than others.
The Michigan Senate race is considered one of the most prominent in the upcoming midterm elections, taking place in a state that was won by Joe Biden in 2020 and Donald Trump in 2024. A recent survey by Michigan firm Epic-MRA shows El-Sayed with a narrow four-point lead over Rogers, a former law enforcement officer with extensive political experience.
