President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he believes Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed is "out of it" and that he and other socialist candidates may negatively impact more centrist members of the Democratic Party in the upcoming midterm elections.

"I look at the people running like in Michigan, I watched his interview the other day with Jesse [Waters]," Trump said, referring to a Tuesday interview between el Sayed and Jesse Watters on Jesse Watters Primetime. "And I said, wow, this man is out of it. This is very dangerous for our country." Trump made these comments during a wide-ranging interview with Fox News’s Trey Gowdy that aired Sunday night.

"I’m not saying [he’s] a good guy, bad guy, I’m just saying this is big, big trouble for our country," Trump continued. "Likewise, many others. And what’s happened is you’re seeing Democrats, of which there are fewer and fewer, are forced to vote in a way that they would not vote. And they don’t even believe in their vote, but if they don’t vote that way, they lose power. With all that being said, I think we’re going to do well."

The race between el Sayed and his Republican opponent Mike Rogers developed further this weekend after el Sayed apologized to a group of Jewish Democrats on Saturday for comments he made in response to an antisemitic attack at a synagogue in March. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) then expressed his support for el Sayed on Sunday, stating, "all of us deserve second chances."

Rogers released a new advertisement on Saturday criticizing el Sayed for past comments about football being racist and stemming from "toxic masculinity." Much of Rogers's campaign has focused on statements el Sayed has made in the past, as well as his decision to campaign alongside internet personality Hasan Piker, who has made controversial remarks regarding the September 11 attacks.

"'Bad for our country' is expanding a trade war with Canada that’s costing us all thousands of dollars," el Sayed responded on X.

Trump also remarked, "I think we’re going to do very well because we have communists, we have a party that’s been infiltrated by bad thought, by bad policy. I used to talk about socialism but this isn’t socialism, this is largely communism."
