Milo Yiannopoulos Detained by ICE, Awaiting Deportation

British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is awaiting deportation. Yiannopoulos, 41, a former editor of Breitbart News and political aide to Kanye West, is reportedly being held in Louisiana, according to ICE's inmate registry. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that he was issued a final order of removal by an Immigration Judge on July 22, after failing to attend his immigration hearing, and will remain in custody pending deportation. Yiannopoulos, who grew up in Kent, England, was arrested on August 27 after arriving at the airport in New Orleans. He entered the U.S. in May 2019 and overstayed his visa, violating immigration laws, according to DHS. The agency referred to him as 'an illegal alien from the United Kingdom.' The BBC has sought comment from the British embassy in Washington, while Yiannopoulos did not respond to their request. The DHS statement indicated that 'being in detention is a choice' and urged migrants in the U.S. illegally to 'self-deport now.' Yiannopoulos was an early supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 election, but has since criticized the former president while still supporting his agenda. He has made controversial remarks regarding various social issues and has previously advocated for strict immigration policies. Laura Loomer, a far-right commentator and Trump ally, claimed responsibility for his arrest, stating that his flight back to the UK had already departed. Yiannopoulos has faced significant backlash for his past comments and actions, including being uninvited from speaking at CPAC in 2017 after controversial remarks surfaced. He has distanced himself from the alt-right movement, despite previously expressing admiration for it.
