Ukraine has reinforced its defenses in the eastern Donetsk region as Russia intensifies efforts to capture Sloviansk, a significant city within Ukraine's strategic defense perimeter. In response to challenges with U.S. Patriot systems, Ukraine is shifting its focus to targeting Russian ballistic missile production using European weaponry.
On August 26, Ukrainian commander-in-chief Mykhailo Drapatyi decided to bolster two units defending Sloviansk. Reports indicate that Russian forces are attempting to infiltrate Kostiantynivka, located south of Sloviansk, although they do not currently control the area. Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets noted that Ukraine maintains its positions in central and northern Kostiantynivka.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 70-80 percent of Russian casualties are occurring at the Kostiantynivka front, estimating Russian losses this year at 267,000, with at least 155,000 killed. Russian commander-in-chief Valery Gerasimov claimed his troops are within four kilometers of Sloviansk, but maps from Deep State and the Institute for the Study of War indicate that Russian troops are actually between 12 and 16 kilometers away.
Ukraine is actively targeting Russian supply lines, including munitions and fuel, to disrupt the flow to the front lines. The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russia has lost 27 square kilometers in August and a total of 233 square kilometers this year.
On August 20, Ukraine destroyed 18 buildings at the Primorsko-Akhtarsk airfield in Krasnodar Krai and a Sukhoi-24 fighter at the Saky airfield in Crimea. Following this, Ukrainian unmanned systems targeted additional Russian aircraft and military assets, including a MiG-29 at Millerovo airfield in Rostov. Ukraine has also successfully targeted Russian military supply vessels, with a total of 242 ships reported disabled.
In a separate campaign, Ukraine has struck 267 power stations and substations in Crimea, leading to significant power shortages. Sergey Aksyonov, the Russia-installed head of Crimea, acknowledged ongoing technical difficulties in restoring power.
Ukraine's long-range strikes have also targeted Russian refineries, with reports indicating that Ukrainian drone strikes have reduced Russian oil refining capacity by 25-30 percent. This has resulted in substantial economic damage, including the destruction of distribution centers for Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries.
In retaliation, Russia has conducted strikes against Ukrainian cities, claiming to respond to attacks on its industrial and logistics facilities. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Kyiv regime has initiated actions that have led to reciprocal strikes.
Despite ongoing attacks, Zelenskyy reported that four to five ships are still navigating in and out of Ukrainian ports daily, although this is significantly reduced compared to pre-blockade levels. Russian strikes have also targeted border crossings with Moldova, impacting grain exports.
Recent Russian drone attacks have resulted in civilian casualties, including 16 deaths in Kryvyi Rih on August 21. Ukraine has managed to intercept some missiles, but the availability of Patriot missiles remains a concern, with Zelenskyy indicating a need for a larger stockpile.
Ukraine is also focusing on developing its own ballistic missile capabilities, with plans to produce missiles by next year. Zelenskyy aims to replicate the capabilities of the Anglo-French Storm Shadow missiles, following the transfer of blueprints from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
