<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The death toll from a <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/russia/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Russian</a> strike on a <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/ukraine/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ukrainian</a> warehouse serving as an ammunition depot has risen to 38, marking it as the deadliest single strike in recent years.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The strike occurred on Friday, targeting a warehouse located in a residential area west of Kyiv in the Bucha district, resulting in a significant explosion. Nearly two days later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky <a href="https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/2093966472750026909?s=20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">reported</a> that first responders were still working to extinguish the flames.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Saturday, Zelensky <a href="https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/2093675130454970521?s=20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">stated</a> that the warehouse was improperly used as an ammunition depot and announced that an investigation had been initiated regarding the negligence of those who stored explosives near populated areas.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I expect the details to be presented to the public promptly. The first strike was on an ammunition storage site that definitely shouldn’t have been there — a Defense Forces storage facility. Shells, mines, other ammunition, and drones detonated. The scale is significant,” he said.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Such a high death toll from a single strike has not been recorded since the early months of the war. Although Russia often launches numerous missiles and drones in single attacks on major cities, the death toll from these operations has generally remained in the single digits.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The death toll from recent strikes has increased over the past two months, attributed to Ukraine's depletion of interceptor ammunition and Russia's decision to broaden its target scope in response to Ukraine's long-range drone attacks on its energy infrastructure and retail warehouses.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Zelensky announced on Sunday that Russia had launched nearly 2,000 drones, over 1,600 aerial bombs, and 31 missiles at Ukraine in the past week.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The past two months have been particularly challenging for Ukraine in the air war. While interceptor shortages related to the conflict with Iran have been a major factor, analysts have also <a href="https://x.com/clement_molin/status/2094016179450835025?s=20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">pointed out</a> that political decisions from Kyiv, including the expansion of its long-range drone campaign to target civilian warehouses, have led to Russia widening its own list of targets.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ukraine has faced significant limitations in accessing the Black Sea after Russia intensified its efforts to target ships around the crucial port city of Odesa, and much of its warehouse storage capacity has been severely impacted. Taras Vysotskyi, Ukraine’s minister of agrarian policy and food, <a href="https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2026/08/28/8050774/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">reported</a> over the weekend that Russian attacks have resulted in the destruction of approximately 90% of Ukraine’s modern storage facilities for goods, leading to increasing shortages in grocery stores.</p>
