Dolly Parton Maintained Political Neutrality Throughout Her Career

<p>Dolly Parton spent decades singing about love, heartbreak, faith, and working '9 to 5,' but she consistently avoided involvement in partisan politics. 'I am not political, and I refuse to get caught up in political things,' Parton stated in a 2020 interview with USA Today.</p><p>Parton, who died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, maintained her stance during presidential elections and in response to questions regarding President Donald Trump and offers of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.</p><p>'I don't like to get involved in politics, because first of all, I have as many Republican fans as I do Democrats,' Parton told USA Today. 'I don't want to offend anybody; I have a right to myself.'</p><p>'Like God gave us free will, America gave us free speech, but you've got to be responsible for anything you say and do,' she added.</p><p>In a 2018 interview with ABC's David Wright, Parton was pressed about Trump but chose not to engage. 'I’m not addressing that,' she said. 'I learned a long time ago, keep your damn mouth shut if you want to stay in show business. … I’m not in politics, I’m an entertainer.'</p><p>When Wright noted that Parton was a role model, she replied, 'Yes I am. That’s why I don’t talk about people.'</p><p>Parton was offered the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice by the Trump administration but declined both times, citing personal reasons. She later expressed hesitation about accepting the award from the Biden administration, stating, 'Now I feel like if I take it, it'll be doing politics, so I'm not so sure,' during an interview on NBC's 'Today.'</p><p>Despite her political neutrality, Parton expressed her beliefs carefully. 'I know whatever I say, people are going to listen, and they’re going to make more of it than maybe what I meant. So I have to be careful,' she told People in 2021. 'Of course I have my opinion, but I’m not an opinionated person as a rule.'</p><p>Parton humorously acknowledged her political neutrality, saying, 'My daddy was a Republican, my mama was a Democrat, and I’m a hypocrite!' in her distinctive Tennessee drawl.</p><p>Her philosophy was tested when she collaborated with Kid Rock for her 2023 album 'Rockstar.' She defended the partnership, stating that she would likely have worked with him regardless of controversy, emphasizing her belief in accepting others despite differences.</p><p>Parton tied her views to her Christian faith, advocating for forgiveness and second chances. 'I ask God every day to let Him shine through me. He’s given me that gift to be able to talk to them, and I’m very careful with it,' she said in 2021.</p><p>During the 2016 presidential campaign, Parton clarified that she had not endorsed Hillary Clinton after her comments were misinterpreted. She later referred to the campaign as 'the greatest show on television' and described both candidates as 'nuts.'</p><p>Parton also dismissed the idea of running for president herself, stating, 'No. I don’t think anybody could actually do a great job at that,' and expressed her preference for making a difference through music and personal interactions.</p><p>Parton died following a 'brief battle with cancer,' according to her representatives. A small, private service will be held for her immediate family, who have requested donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library instead of flowers.</p>
