Senator Darline Graham Nordone (R-SC) stated that national security is not her area of expertise but expressed strong support for President Donald Trump's defense agenda during a debate in Newberry, South Carolina. Graham is competing against Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) in a Republican runoff to replace the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
During the debate, hosted by Newsmax, candidates were asked about U.S. national security concerns regarding tensions between China and Taiwan. Graham admitted, "I’m not that informed on national security," while affirming her support for the military. Norman responded by highlighting Trump's policy of "peace through strength" and the importance of Taiwan as a U.S. ally in the chip manufacturing sector.
Graham's lack of experience in national security has been noted as a potential weakness in her campaign. She reiterated her support for Trump's policies, particularly regarding Iran, stating, "I fully trust President Trump when it comes to the war in Iran," and emphasized the need to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Norman, while supportive of Trump, suggested that Americans need clearer communication from the president regarding the situation in the Middle East.
On defense spending, Graham criticized Norman for previously voting against a defense spending bill, while Norman clarified that his vote was based on seeking a better deal. The Republican primary runoff is scheduled for August 25.
