Four people fighting a wildfire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java were killed on Thursday after being trapped by flames, Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry said Friday. Two other people suffered serious burns and were receiving treatment, the ministry said. It did not identify the victims.
Indonesia said it would accept foreign assistance as it confronts forest fires described by Al Jazeera as the country’s worst in more than a decade. Smoke from the fires has spread beyond Indonesia, Reuters reported. Separately, the BBC reported that haze covered Palangka Raya in Kalimantan, where the national environment ministry recorded an ISPU air-pollution reading above 1,200 on Wednesday. The BBC said the hazardous threshold is 300 and that the smog was affecting Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.
