The U.S. military said Wednesday it had completed the withdrawal of its troops from Iraq, with the last personnel leaving an air base in Irbil in the northern Kurdish region under an agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said troops and equipment made an “orderly departure” from the base. Al Jazeera reported that a few hundred remaining U.S. soldiers had been serving advisory roles in a coalition operation against ISIL that began in 2015. Fox News said the broader U.S. mission began with the 2003 invasion and later shifted to assisting Iraqi forces against the Islamic State group.

Iraq is marking four national “Sovereignty Days” for the departure, Al Jazeera reported. The withdrawal comes amid a U.S.-Iran war that has sometimes extended into Iraq, according to the New York Post.
