The Senate on Tuesday blocked a Democratic resolution seeking a State Department report on violence and human rights conditions in the West Bank, including killings of U.S. citizens. Al Jazeera reported the measure failed 53-47, while The Intercept reported a 51-47 vote against advancing it.
The resolution, introduced by Maryland Democrat Chris Van Hollen, called for reporting on the deaths of nine Americans killed by Israeli settlers or security forces in the West Bank since 2022, according to the Guardian. It also addressed Israel’s detention of Palestinian children. The Guardian said the department would have had 30 days to report to Congress.
Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to oppose advancing the measure, Al Jazeera reported. Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky voted with Democrats in support. The Hill said the proposal also sought reporting on violence against U.S. citizens by Israel in the West Bank.
