President Donald Trump on Friday created a committee to investigate allegations that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made false statements on mortgage applications, opening another step in his effort to remove her.
Trump's written memo calls for a White House hearing on Nov. 5 and says Cook “shall” attend to answer the committee's questions. PBS NewsHour reported that the hearing will not be public, though its transcript is to be released. The Hill also described the panel as part of Trump's effort to fire Cook.
Mother Jones said the Supreme Court rejected Trump's earlier attempts to fire Cook in June. The new committee is to examine the mortgage-related allegations against her.
