New York City lawmakers are expected to vote on a measure ending horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park, after Mayor Zohran Mamdani reached an agreement with City Council Speaker Julie Menin. The proposal would prohibit the operations beginning June 1, 2028, if the council approves it.

The legislation is known as Romanch's Law, Fox News reported, after 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan suffered fatal injuries in a horse-drawn carriage crash in June. PBS reported the council vote was expected next week, while Fox News said it was scheduled for Oct. 22. Menin's spokesperson told PBS the measure had sufficient support to pass. Mamdani said the horse-carriage industry was ending in the city. The rides have operated for more than 150 years and have faced opposition over animal welfare and safety concerns.
