Shannon O’Brien resigned Monday as chair of the Montana Democratic Party and endorsed independent Senate candidate Seth Bodnar over the party’s nominee, Alani Bankhead, in Montana’s open Senate race.

O’Brien announced the decision in an MS NOW opinion article, according to The Hill and the Washington Examiner. The Examiner reported that she wrote Bankhead “does not have the momentum, resources or will to win this race.” The Washington Post also reported that O’Brien joined other state Democrats in endorsing Bodnar.

The endorsement comes weeks before the November midterm elections, The Hill reported. O’Brien had led the state party since 2025, according to that outlet.
