Justice Samuel Alito said he considered retiring at the end of the Supreme Court’s last term but will serve another term, according to remarks reported by CBS News and the Washington Examiner.

In an interview with CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford, Alito said he “thought about” retiring. The Washington Examiner reported that Alito, 76, said there is no perfect time to retire and would reconsider the question next year. It said Republicans’ control of the Senate would have provided a smoother path to confirming a conservative replacement. CBS News reported that Crawford asked Alito whether he had considered retirement amid pressure from Republicans.
